Why You'll Never Be Ready

“How do you know when you’re ready?”

It’s so easy for me to recall all the reasons I created and told myself over the years, in order to justify why I wasn’t ready to tackle something new.

“I can’t take a part-time course after my full-time job because it’s all the way downtown and I’ll be so tired afterwards.”

“I’m waiting until I see him at prom before I tell him that I like him.”

“Finding a new job right now is going to be so difficult. The industry is super competitive in the city.”

“Going to pilates class before work is impossible. I can’t wake up at 5:30am.”

“What’s the point of starting a blog? Everyone has already said what I wanted to say.”

Again and again, I’ve convinced myself that I wasn’t ready to do what I wanted to do. Again and again, I gave myself excuses that would postpone me from simply starting the task. Not researching it, or talking about it, but actually working on.

Eventually, I began to ask myself what did I need to do so that I would feel prepared and ready to start. How would I truly know that I was ready?

Would it be after I’m absolutely confident that my decision was the most risk averse? Or after I’ve talked it over with my best friend and received her approval? Or was it simply a matter of my intuition?

Regardless of how I was going to measure my readiness, I needed to step back for a moment and consider what was truly holding me back from starting now. Was I scared of failure? Worried that I’d be rejected? Or did I secretly believe that no one would support me and my efforts?

If you are currently having similar thoughts as I did, find solace in knowing that you’re not the only one.

Pause for a few moments.

Take a deep breathe.

Smile and give yourself a hug.

Push those fears aside.

And breath deeply one more time (for good measure).

You are more ready than you realize for the experience you want to pursue. Rather than worrying about whether or not you are ready, think about all the amazing things that will happen once you begin.

Focus on what you can do today. Figure out what actions you can do, no matter how small they may be, that will bring you closer to making your dreams and ambitions come to life.

Everything you need in order to start re-shaping your reality, you already have. In fact, you have more than enough.

So, how did I ever figure out when I was ready? I didn’t. Most of us are never really ready to do anything that we do, but we push past the fear and do it anyways. That’s what makes life such an incredible adventure.

Quit procrastinating. Your time is now.
